What is employer branding?

Employer branding is the term used by businesses and organisations to help differentiate themselves in the recruitment market, enabling them to attract, retain and engage with the right people. A strong employer brand will help businesses compete for the best talent in their industry, alongside establishing credibility and strong reputation.

Employer branding should align with, and be consistent with the organisation’s core values and brand identity.

Understanding your audience

All organisations need to be aware of what their existing employees, stakeholders and customers think of them. Alongside our standard branding workshop, we have also developed practical exercises specific to employer branding that helps an organisation have a clear vision of what their recruitment proposition is and how they can develop their employee lifecycle to build a more engaged workforce and ensure a positive work experience.

The importance of employer branding

Employer branding is relevant for many organisations in current uncertain economic times, and particularly in marketplaces where there are a shortage of skills such as engineering, or a market competing for the same top talent such as IT and Digital.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic has also seen a shift in demands from employees for more flexibility and better expectations with regards to remote working and employee benefits.

How to develop your employer brand

Our employer branding services provide detailed analysis, advice and suggestions for developing an employer brand within an organisation, and typically takes places in two stages; Discovery and Analysis.

Discovery is understanding how the employer brand is perceived by various stakeholders that would include:

  • Workshops with senior management
  • Employee Surveys
  • Internal / External focus groups
  • Talent journey audits

Analysis is about building a clear picture of what your organisation stands for, what it offers, what expectations there are from its employees. Essentially, this the ‘value proposition’. This can include activities such as:

  • Defining brand values
  • Defining the overall employer value proposition
  • Developing creative briefs and marketing plans

Examples of exercises we hold

Getting To Know You Questionnaire

This is a set of questions that provides background information about the organisation, such as history of the organisation, types of clients that currently work with the organisation or would like to attract.

Brand Personality Slider

This exercises helps stakeholders to gauge the personality of the brand and what their thoughts are on certain characteristics of the brand. This a visual exercise that asks participants to place markers on a sliding scale. For example, where do you think the brand sits between being ‘elite’ or ‘mass market’?. Another example is asking participants whether they think the brand is ‘serious’ or ‘playful’.

This exercise can often provide interesting results and allows all stakeholders to give their viewpoint on how they think the brand should be portrayed.

Who Is Your Audience?

This exercise asks participants to start thinking about who their target audience is. Often, we will divide this into 4 or 5 key audiences, then start asking questions about what the stakeholders want their audiences to think about how they want the brand to perceived, and then start to discussing how this will be achieved.

Brand Deck

One of our most thought-provoking exercises, this involves giving participants set of cards that has alternative words on each side. The aim of the exercise is to determine what words are most relevant to the core values of the brand. For example, is your brand ‘modern’ or ‘traditional’, ‘reserved’ or ‘welcoming’, ‘serious’ or ‘fun’…you get the idea!

Brand Map

The Brand Map is to complement the previous Brand Deck exercise and helps determine the brand values through a visual diagram, to find Core Values (what core value does the client want to be) Company Values (How the client will be perceived) and Tonal Values (the way the client will communicate).

Persona Reports

Personas are fictional profiles, often developed as a way of representing a particular group such as existing clients or ideal new clients. They represent a ‘character’ with which both your organisation and us as a design team can engage with. We use these to get different perspectives on your service and to get an indication of the wants and needs of real people. Personas can be constructed as a group activity and are a collation of feedback that embody the real-world perceptions of your organisation’s services.

Talent Journey Audit

Talent journey audits help organisations understand every step of the recruitment process, from the initial contact with candidates to post-employment follow-up. This helps ensure a positive experience for everyone involved. Are there any individual aspects of your processes or communications that are missing or can be improved upon. By uncovering these and understanding how people interact with them, we can make better judgements on how to make them work better for your organisation.

What type of organisation would benefit from an employer branding workshop?

At Alliance Agency, we follow a collaborative approach to deliver logos that truly capture your brand essence:

Established SMEs

Over time, businesses can get caught up with the day-to-day running of their business that they often forget their purpose or their why? Our employer brand workshop is ideal for those business owners, senior managers and stakeholders that want to redefine their core values to better understand how they can communicate effectively when hiring new talent to their organisation.

Public Sector & Social Enterprises

Public sector organisations, charities and not-for-profits are often large in size and split into numerous departments. This can often mean that communication doesn’t always work as effectively as it should, resulting in the organisation producing conflicting or confusing messages to the people that they employ. Recent events such as the pandemic has resulted in organisations becoming fragmented, with many team members adapting to working from home or splitting time between virtual and in-person workplaces. Our brand workshop helps bring departments together to form a coherent and consistent message through better understanding of an organisation’s core brand values, their customer’s service journey and target audience needs.

What are the outcomes from an employer branding workshop?

Once completed, we’ll provide your organisation with a comprehensive report that fully explains the findings from any workshops, surveys and audits that we undertake with you.

Typically, this information would then be placed with an employee at the organisation that would be tasked with managing and developing the employer branding for organisation.

However, as a full-service marketing and design agency, we can help with implementation of employer branding through our services such as content creationsocial media managementPR and brand identity design.
