Our Top 4 Favourite Christmas Adverts of 2020

The festive season is well and truly underway, and Santa isn’t the only one preparing for the month ahead. With businesses across the world having launched their Christmas campaigns for 2020 it can be difficult to decide which ones really made an impact this year. Luckily for you, here at Alliance, Christmas is our favourite time of the year, from the lights to the food. There is just something about the festivities that brings everyone together. With this in mind, we thought it would be a great idea to collate some of our favourite Christmas adverts this year. So, grab a seat, turn up the fire, and enjoy;

Sainsbury’s (Kayleigh’s choice)

Sainsbury’s released three Christmas adverts as part of their campaign – Gravy Song, Perfect Portions, and Big Sarnie – each reflecting a different aspect of Christmas.

Nostalgia and storytelling are some of the most powerful tools a marketing campaign can utilise. Sainsbury delves into these themes heavily and takes a heartfelt look at Christmas through the eyes of food, family, and memories. Each of these three adverts centre around the personal stories of modern British Families and their connection to Christmas through these. It is this, and the portrayal of the home video-style footage and phone conversations between family members that allowed Sainsbury’s to make our nice list this year.

Tesco (Gareth’s choice)

In light of the recent pandemic, and the struggles it has brought with it this year, the distance between people has never been greater (literately!). That’s why Tesco’s ‘After this year, there is no naughty list’ Christmas campaign made our list.

Like Sainsbury’s, Tesco focused on multiple households as they prepare for the festive season. They created a well needed breathe of fresh air as they encourage shoppers to forget about all that has happened in 2020 and enjoy the festive period for what it is. This light-hearted, humorous advert did just that, and we thought they deserved a place on our list.

Branston (Ben’s choice)

This year, Branston unveiled their emotive Christmas advert, which focuses on home comforts, and how food can play a big role in bringing people together.

The short 60-second advert portrays a young woman leaving the nest and settling into her new life in the city after landing a new job. After a tiresome day she finds a jar of pickle and it lifts her spirits. Although simple, the message is strong as It highlights how even a simple jar of Branston pickle can remind you of home and bring you even closer with your family.

Not on The High Street (Matt’s choice)

As a small business ourselves, we appreciate the important message NOTHS were conveying in their first Christmas advert in three years titled ‘The Magic of Small Things’.

The one-minute advert portrays the national shift towards supporting local businesses and cherishing the simple moments of connection that have become even more important this year. Gavin Leisfield, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Friendly Giants stated that this campaign acted as a ‘gentle but powerful call-to-arms’. It is this ever more important message of supporting local businesses and call to action that allowed NOTHS to make our list this year.
