Transforming Data into Impact: Designing the British Red Cross's Seen and Heard Report to Address Health Inequalities
The British Red Cross report, Seen and Heard: Understanding Frequent Attendance at A&E, examines the healthcare needs of individuals who frequently attend A&E services in Dorset.
The report identifies two primary cohorts: older adults aged 70+ with multiple long-term conditions, often requiring palliative care, and younger adults aged 20-49, predominantly affected by socio-economic deprivation, mental health challenges, and substance misuse.
It highlights the link between deprivation and frequent A&E visits and underscores the need for proactive, community-based interventions to address unmet clinical and non-clinical needs.
Key recommendations include expanding access to mental health support, improving preventive care for long-term conditions, and increasing the use of linked data for early intervention.

Designing the Report
The report design process involved close collaboration between us and the British Red Cross Policy Team.
Initially, the project began with detailed consultations to define the report’s objectives, structure, and visual style. It was essential to create a professional and engaging document that aligned with the British Red Cross’s branding and communicated complex data in an accessible format.
Content preparation relied heavily on Word documents provided by the Policy Team, which contained raw data, analytical findings, and insights from workshops and interviews. These documents formed the foundation of the report, which was designed to include visually striking infographics, charts, and tables to distill complex information into digestible elements. The iterative design process involved continuous feedback from policy officers to ensure that the visuals and overall layout aligned with the report’s messaging and objectives.
A strong focus was placed on accessibility, with the design prioritising clarity through the use of clean fonts, high-contrast colour schemes, and standardised formats for all visual elements. These efforts ensured the report was not only visually appealing but also easy to read for a diverse audience, including policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the public.
The Outcome
The collaboration resulted in a professional, user-friendly report that effectively communicated the findings and recommendations. By combining clear design with accessible language, the report succeeded in bridging the gap between technical data and actionable insights.
The final product, delivered in both digital and print-ready formats, highlights the importance of design in amplifying the impact of policy-focused publications.
This project demonstrates how strategic design can transform raw data into a compelling narrative that drives meaningful change.
